Offering your own help with ましょうか
Open chapter 1 and use the word support directly below. Then read the offer of help aloud and point to the object and the offered action.
1. Replace ます with ましょうか
Replace only ます: 持ちます → 持ちましょうか, 手伝います → 手伝いましょうか, and 開けます → 開けましょうか. The final か makes it a question.
In this lesson, the speaker offers to perform the action for the other person. Read 荷物を持ちましょうか as ‘shall I carry the luggage?’.
荷物を持ちましょうか。
2. Who performs the action?
Vましょう proposes a shared step in lesson 42. In this bounded help situation, Vましょうか means the speaker asks whether they should act for the other person.
Outside this course context, ましょうか can sometimes also mean a shared ‘shall we?’. Here, the other person's problem and the offered action make the helper clear.
3. Object and action must fit
Choose a logical combination: open a window with 開けます or close it with 閉めます; turn a light on with つけます or off with 消します; take a photo with 撮ります.
An offer can be accepted with はい、お願いします. ありがとうございます gives thanks but does not always state as explicitly that the help is wanted, so practise お願いします first.
窓を開けましょうか。
はい、お願いします。
4. Make two suitable offers
Think of two fictional problems and offer a different concrete action for each. Have one offer accepted.
Check who acts, whether object and verb fit logically, and whether ます was actually replaced.
