Proposing a shared plan with ましょう
Open chapter 1 and use the word support directly below. Then read the proposal example aloud and point to the activity both people will carry out.
1. Replace ます with ましょう
Take the familiar ます-form, remove ます, and add ましょう: 休みます → 休みましょう, 急ぎます → 急ぎましょう, and 会います → 会いましょう.
The speaker presents the action as a plan for speaker and listener together. Choose an action and situation in which both can participate.
ここで少し休みましょう。
2. Invite gently or present a plan
Vませんか invites the other person with a question and clearly leaves room to decline. Vましょう presents a shared plan more directly as ‘let us’. Both are polite, but their function and tone differ.
Do not automatically use ましょうか: in the next lesson, that form has the bounded course function ‘shall I help?’.
3. Confirm a proposal
ええ、そうしましょう refers directly back to the proposed plan: ‘yes, let us do that’. わかりました is especially suitable for confirming a concrete arrangement.
A time marked by に and meeting place marked by で keep their familiar roles: 明日十時に駅で会いましょう.
ええ、そうしましょう。
明日十時に駅で会いましょう。
4. Make a logical group plan
Choose a fictional reason: someone is tired, time is short, or there is an arrangement. Make a fitting proposal and add an agreeing response.
Check the ます-stem, the written long う in ましょう, and whether the action can truly be a shared plan.
