Lesson 24: Choosing with のほうが

Ask a question between two options and mark the chosen or more strongly described option with のほうが, or answer appropriately with どちらも.

Choose with のほうが

For this exercise, choose between ひらがな and カタカナ. Say ひらがなよりカタカナのほうが難しいです and point to the option described as more difficult. That is カタカナ, directly before のほうが.

1. A is the reference; B is chosen

The pattern A より B のほうが quality です begins with A as the comparison reference. B comes directly before のほうが and is the chosen option or the option with more of the quality. In 魚より肉のほうが好きです, fish is A and meat is B; meat is preferred.

Break the sentence down as 魚より ‘compared with fish’ + 肉のほうが ‘the meat option is the chosen side’ + 好きです ‘is preferred’. のほうが does not mean ‘better’ by itself; it works with the final word, such as 好き, 難しい, or 忙しい.

魚より肉のほうが好きです。

ひらがなよりカタカナのほうが難しいです。

2. Ask neutrally between two options

The two-choice question is A と B とどちらが quality ですか. The first と links A and B; the second と connects the two options to どちらが. カレーとラーメンとどちらが好きですか asks without choosing a winner in advance. The second と is optional: A と B、どちらが…ですか is also correct. Our examples usually practise both と.

どちら means ‘which of the two’ here. どれ from lesson 19 fits choosing among more than two visible objects. 好き asks about preference; 難しい asks which option is more difficult. Keep the quality consistent between question and answer.

3. Answer with the chosen option

A short choice answer is B のほうが quality です. To 肉と魚とどちらが好きですか, both 肉のほうが好きです and 魚のほうが好きです can be grammatically and contextually appropriate; the speaker determines the preference.

A bounded exercise may specify one choice, for example ‘answer that you prefer meat’. Then only 肉のほうが好きです has the intended meaning. 魚のほうが好きです remains grammatical but answers that concrete prompt differently.

4. どちらも when both options fit

どちらも means ‘both’. To an open preference question, you can answer どちらも好きです if you like both options. You do not identify one winner with のほうが.

The answer says the quality applies to both; it does not automatically prove an exactly equal ranking. In a prompt that explicitly asks you to choose one option, どちらも does not fulfil the prompt, even though it is natural in an open conversation.

どちらも好きです。

どちらも難しいです。

5. Track the question, choice, and quality

Read the existing conversation about food and scripts. For each question, note the two options and the quality. Then note whether the answer selects one B with のほうが or both options with どちらも.

Then make a new combination with パン and ご飯. The final check always states whether you must produce a neutral question, one specified choice, or a both-options answer.
