Lesson 22: Looking back with な words and nouns

Choose the correct affirmative or negative past form for a な adjective or noun and distinguish it from the い pattern.

Past forms with な adjectives and nouns

You know the い adjective past from lesson 21. Now say 富士山はきれいでした and 昨日は雨でした. In both sentences, only です changes to でした; then decide whether the key word is a な adjective or a noun.

1. A な adjective keeps its form

A な adjective is a quality word that takes な directly before a noun, as in 簡単なテスト. When it forms the predicate with です, な is not shown: テストは簡単です. For the past affirmative, replace です with でした: 簡単でした.

The core words follow the same pattern: きれいでした, にぎやかでした, and 静かでした. Pay special attention to きれい: it visibly ends in い, but belongs to this な group. Therefore, きれかったです is incorrect.

富士山はきれいでした。

大阪はにぎやかでした。

テストは簡単でした。

2. A noun uses the same past ending

A noun names an object, event, or state. With nouns too, です becomes でした in the past affirmative: 雨です → 雨でした and テストです → テストでした. The noun itself does not change.

Weather words such as 晴れ, 雨, 雪, and 曇り are nouns in these sentences. Therefore, say 晴れでした, 雨でした, 雪でした, and 曇りでした. Do not say 雨かったです; that would treat the noun as an い adjective.

昨日は晴れでした。

おとといは雨でした。

昨日はテストでした。

3. Past negative: じゃありませんでした

For ‘was not’, both a な adjective and a noun use じゃありませんでした. This gives 簡単じゃありませんでした and 雨じゃありませんでした. The more formal variant ではありませんでした has the same meaning and is also correct.

Compare all four forms before choosing: 簡単です ‘is easy’, 簡単じゃありません ‘is not easy’, 簡単でした ‘was easy’, 簡単じゃありませんでした ‘was not easy’. The same complete row works with 雨 in the first position.

4. Choose the word class, then the ending

Use a fixed decision route. Step 1: is it a regular い adjective such as 楽しい? Then use かった or くなかった. Step 2: is it a な adjective such as 簡単 or きれい, or a noun such as 雨? Then use でした or じゃありませんでした.

Step 3: decide affirmative or negative. This produces four target endings rather than one universal past ending: かったです, くなかったです, でした, and じゃありませんでした. The いい exception from lesson 21 remains separate with よかった and よくなかった.

5. Ask and answer about past weather

昨日の天気はどうでしたか asks what yesterday's weather was like. Answer with one weather noun + でした: 晴れでした, 雨でした, 雪でした, or 曇りでした. For a negative, deliberately state what it was not, for example 雪じゃありませんでした.

Then read the existing conversation: it compares weather, a test, and a place. Mentally label each answer ‘noun’, ‘な adjective’, or ‘い adjective’. This practises the choice required by the final check.

昨日の天気はどうでしたか。

晴れでした。
