Say what something was like with い adjectives
You know descriptions such as 楽しいです and おもしろくないです. Now say one pair: 今日は忙しいです, 先週は忙しかったです. Listen only to the changed ending; that is your small first action.
1. Past affirmative: い becomes かったです
An い adjective describes a quality and ends in い in its basic form. To say the quality applied in the past, remove the final い and replace it with かったです. Thus 楽しい becomes 楽しかったです: ‘was fun’.
The same change works for all regular words in this lesson: 忙しい→忙しかった, 暖かい→暖かかった, おもしろい→おもしろかった, 早い→早かった, 遅い→遅かった, 多い→多かった, and 少ない→少なかった. Keep the complete stem; in 暖かかった, both か syllables remain audible. Here 早い means early; the different word 速い means fast. Both are read はやい. This exercise uses 早い and therefore concerns an early time.
お祭りは楽しかったです。
先週は暖かかったです。
昨日は忙しかったです。
2. Past negative: くなかったです
For ‘was not …’, replace the final い with くなかったです. おもしろい becomes おもしろくなかったです. The くない part of the present negative thus becomes くなかった in the past.
All regular words follow the same route: 楽しくなかった, 忙しくなかった, 暖かくなかった, 早くなかった, 遅くなかった, 多くなかった, and 少なくなかった. Do not use じゃありませんでした with these い adjectives; lesson 22 uses that ending with な adjectives and nouns.
この映画はおもしろくなかったです。
先週は忙しくなかったです。
3. いい uses the stem よ
いい means ‘good’, but its past forms are not built directly from the visible form いい. Learn the fixed pair: よかったです ‘was good’ and よくなかったです ‘was not good’. The stem here is よ.
That is why いいかったです and いいくなかったです are incorrect. Compare いいです (‘is good’) with よかったです (‘was good’), and よくないです (‘is not good’) with よくなかったです (‘was not good’). Remember the よ stem in both past forms.
4. Ask what something was like
N はどうでしたか asks what N was like. でした in the question places the conversation in the past; the answer then uses a fitting past description. Because the question already names the topic, 楽しかったです is a complete short answer.
Time words such as 昨日, おととい, 先週, and 去年 can set the time frame without an extra time particle. With の, they connect a period to a noun: 去年の夏 ‘last year's summer’ and 昨日のテスト ‘yesterday's test’.
お祭りはどうでしたか。
楽しかったです。
去年の夏は暑かったです。
5. From recognition to a new experience
First read and listen to the existing conversation about a festival, a busy Saturday, and a film. For each answer, decide: affirmative or negative, and which base adjective can you identify? Then return and replace both the topic and the quality.
The final check asks for no new word class. You only need to move a familiar い form into the past and preserve the meaning of いい. Reading support and hints remain available, but make an independent attempt first.
