Lesson 20: Joining two descriptions

Connect two complete descriptions with そして or the fixed frame ~ですが、~です.

Two descriptions: adding or contrasting

Say two separate sentences: この本はおもしろいです. 新しいです. Now put そして only before the second sentence. You have completed the smallest full step in this lesson.

1. そして adds a second statement

Use そして when you simply want to add a second property. Begin with a complete description ending in です. Then put そして before the second complete description: この本はおもしろいです。そして、新しいです. The topic can be omitted from the second sentence because you are still discussing the same book.

Here, そして tells the listener that the second piece of information is being added. Two positive properties do not always have to point in the same evaluative direction, but this beginner lesson uses clear additive pairs such as cheap and delicious or quiet and clean. That keeps the connector's meaning easy to see.

この本はおもしろいです。そして、新しいです。

このレストランは安いです。そして、おいしいです。

2. First choose two suitable properties

Use familiar words from lesson 17 and add useful new pairs. おもしろい and 新しい can describe a book together. 安い and おいしい fit a restaurant or dish. 難しい and 楽しい can describe an activity together when you deliberately intend a contrast. 古い and 便利 fit a dictionary.

高い can mean ‘expensive’ with a product or restaurant and ‘high’ with a building or mountain. In lesson examples about a book or dish, it means ‘expensive’. Pair a word with the described thing before deciding whether the second property adds information or provides a contrast.

3. The fixed contrast frame ~ですが、~です

Use ですが when the second property creates a contrast or counterweight. In この辞書は古いですが、便利です, ‘old’ may be a drawback while ‘useful’ supplies a benefit in contrast. The first description keeps です and takes が directly: 古いです + が → 古いですが.

Learn the complete frame ~ですが、~です here. Do not omit the second predicate: the listener needs to hear what the contrast is. Do not use ですが merely because there are two properties; without an intended contrast, そして is the clearer practice choice.

この辞書は古いですが、便利です。

この料理はおいしいですが、高いです。

4. No new general linking rule

This lesson connects complete descriptions with そして or uses the fixed frame ~ですが、~です. You do not need to form an adjective link such as おもしろくて. That different connector has its own form and meaning rules and is outside lesson 20's active scope.

In this lesson, first choose two complete forms you already know: おもしろいです, 新しいです, 古いです, or 便利です. Then determine the meaning relation. The connector does not change the word class or negative rule from lesson 17.

5. From two separate sentences to one choice

Write two properties of a fictional book as separate sentences. In your own language, label whether the second mainly adds information or contrasts. Then connect them using the appropriate lesson pattern. Repeat with a dictionary and deliberately switch connectors.

The final check first assesses the meaning relation and a complete contrast, then one complete そして production and one complete ですが production. Follow the stated meaning relation in the writing tasks.
